A Junior Library Guild Selection In 1955, thirteen-year-old Lyric moves with her dad, Poppy, and older sister, Summer, from a tucked-away holler in Virginia to the big industrial city of Flint, Michigan. Getting out of Glory Bottom is a dream-come-true for both girls, but after a hopeful beginning up north, Summer's funny ways start to turn serious. She drops first out of school, then out of society almost completely. Her descent into mental illness is described through the eyes of Lyric, who loves her sister deeply yet feels increasing frustration, embarrassment, and anger about Summer's disease.
